Building successful geomembrane projects over more than 50 years

Our History

Founded in 1963, Carpi started as waterproofing contractor for roofing, traffic tunnels and waste landfills. Since 1970 waterproofing of hydraulic structures with synthetic geomembranes became our main field of activity.

Our company history is marked by outstanding milestones.

  • 1980 Lago Nero concrete dam (Italy), 43 m, first installation of a SIBELON® geomembrane to rehabilitate the whole upstream face;
  • 1990 Le Riou RCC dam (France), 20 m, first installation of a SIBELON® geomembrane over the whole upstream face of a new RCC Dam;
  • 1992 Sa Forada rockfill Dam (Italy), 30 m, first installation of a SIBELON® geomembrane over the whole upstream face to repair the asphalt concrete facing;
  • 1997 Lost Creek gravity dam (USA), 36 m, first underwater installation of a SIBELON® geomembrane over the whole upstream face;
  • 2008 Sar Chesmeh rockfill Dam (Iran), 20 m, first Geomembrane Facing Rock Fill Dam (GFRD);
  • 2009 Gibe III cofferdam (Ethiopia), 52 m, first zig zag geomembrane core;
  • 2015 Las Bambas tailings Dam (Peru), the highest Geomembrane Facing Rock Fill Dam (GFRD) in the world, 235 m when completed;
  • 2016 New Set of Locks for the Panama Canal Expansion, waterproofing of 18 Water Saving Basins (Panama). Largest pumped storage scheme in the world, 5 filling and emptying cycles per day, 365 days a year;
  • 2016 Ismailia canal (Egypt), first underwater installation in flowing water of SIBELONMAT®, a system of watertight double geomembrane mattresses filled with grout and connected by heavy duty watertight zips.
